Chinese Dietary Laws according to Classical Chinese Medicine
1. Doctrine of the Mean: Eat in Moderation
A. Overeating will result in a buildup of the Yin which will impede the flow of Yang of impede the function of the organs causing depletions or deficiencies.
B. Undereating will not allow the body toproduce the Qi and Blood to nourish (Yin) the function (Yang) of the organsts, also causing defeciencies.
2. Know the foodstuffs eaten at extreme temperatures may cause imbalances:
A. Hot Foods may damage the digestive organs (Yin)
B. Cold foods may put out the Middle Burner Fire (Yang)
3. Limit the amount of fluids that you consume, especially at mealtime. Eat when you are hungry and drink when you are thirsty. Don't rink fluids when you eat solid food as too much fluid will damage/drown the Kidney fire which acts as a transport system.
4. Maintain a vigot of the Middle Warmer or Middle Burner by including cooked foods as well as energetically warming foods to nourish the Earth element (Stomach and Spleen).
5. Keep food no longer than 48 hours after the time of preperation -- After 48 hours the food loses it's vitality.
6. Cook as many fresh fruits and vegetables as pssible and preferably oganically grown and foods that are grown regionally.
7. Eat Widely. According to the classical way , one needs to include in one's diet 40 different foods daily.
8. Eat in a relaxed admosphere. Take time to eat your meal. Chew each bite 20 times.
9. Choose food judiciously according to the seasons of the year:
A. Spring: Eat green vegetables which move upward.
B. Summer: Eat flowers, spices and leaves which move outward.
C. Late Summer: Round, yellow, sweett foods strengthening the center.
D. Autumn: Eat roots which move downward.
C. Winter: Eat nuts, grains, seeds and beans which move inward.
10. Include these 6 flavors into each meal that you eat:
Salty (Kidney)
Sweet (Spleen)
Bitter (Heart)
Spicy/Pungent (Lung)
Sour (Liver)
11. Include these 5 colors into each meal you prepare:
Black/Purple (Kidney)
Orange/Yellow (Spleen)
Red (Heart)
White (Lung)
Green/Blue (Liver)
12. Eat like a Queen at breakfast, a princess at lunch, and a pauper at dinner.
13. Use flesh as a condiment, not as a main dish. Learn to use flesh as flavoring insteead of the main course. You should learn to use 4 parts vegetables with 1 part flesh.
14. Don't drink ied drinks. This wil severely impaire digestion.
15. Be Sure to walk 200 steps after every meal.
16. Don't eat raw foods ie.. Salads, especially if your spleen is weak. Salads should only be eaten in the height of summer and not as a main meal. A salad should be eaten last as a side dish.
17. Doctrine and Signatures: The doctrine of signatures states that "Things looking similar or sharing similar structuresembody similar principles of essence (Yin) and energy (Yang) Like cures like.
